Story
Italian merchant traveller Marco polo (Gary Tantony) shares his views of Kakatiya kingdom in Orugallu ruled by Ganapathi Devudu (Krishnam Raju) and his daughter Rudramadevi (Anushka) who was raised as male child Rudradevudu to safeguard the Kakatiya Kingdom rule as its successor, due to the threatening invasions from neighboring rivals. Prince Maha Deva (Vikramjeet Virk), a Yadava King from Nidadavolu, and their cousins Hari Hara Devudu (Suman), Murari Devudu (Adithya Menon) were the arch rivals of Kakatiya dynasty, who waits for the right time to invade a war to capture the Kakatiya Empire. Rudradeva alias Rudramadevi has to work on her mission to safeguard Kakatiya dynasty from the rivals and how Gona Ganna Reddy and Chalukya Veera Bhadra joined her in war is the rest.

Performances

Anushka looked royal, majestic, and the warrior queen roles seem to be tailor-made for the actress. She gets into the skin of Rudramadevi role showcasing the male and female traits simultaneously in her act, with varied emotions.

Allu Arjun in the role of Gona Ganna Reddy delivers stellar performance. He has terrific screen presence and impresses with his powerful dialogue delivery with his dialect, body language and attitude.

Rana as Chalukya Veerabhadra does his act well, but his characterization hasn’t had much scope, Nithya Menon plays yet another crucial role as princess, though is limited to four-five scenes.

Prakash Raj is perfect as Rudrama Devi’s guru Shivadevayya, who has some crucial scenes in second hour. Krishnam Raju is justifying in Ganapathi Devudu role, Suman, Aditya Menon, Baba Sehgal were limited but played significant roles.

Technical Analysis

Ilayaraja’s musical scores aren’t pleasing and the background score could be more elevating in the crucial war scenes and significant episodes. Cinematography is not grand enough for such historical movie. Such historical 3D films need grand technical values especially VFX works, but the graphics works are bad. Dialogues were apt, Art work by Thota Tharani is grand and the sets are lavishly designed. Neeta Lulla’s costumes were regal. Srikar Prasad’s editing could have been crisp. Production values of Guna team Works are ok.

Analysis

Rudramadevi is made based on the real history of warrior queen, who ruled Kakatiya Dynasty. Gunassekhar has made the film with a blend of history and some fiction. Though the director showed off some of the facts, the basic story isn’t made gripping, the screenplay lacked transparency. The casting is perfect but the characterizations are limited and are neither gripping. The only characterization which standout entirely in the movie is the Gona Ganna Reddy and Allu Arjun is the show stealer of the film. But the remaining characterization including the main Rudramadevi role lacked conviction, though Anushka tried to save with her screen presence.

Such historical subjects need gripping narration and visuals need to be grandeur, but the CG work is not up to the mark in this 80 Crore budget movie. While the first half moves on a smooth ride with a couple of twists, the second half is inconsistent, lacked clarity, while the climax is weak.

Gunasekhar has put in lots of effort and money on Rudramadevi, and his sincere attempt to make a film on untold history is noticeable in several episodes, but the film had some major drawbacks with weak screenplay, Rudramadevi characterization blend, unimpressive stunts and worst VFX works.

ZC Take :-

Rudramadevi- Gona Ganna Reddy is the saving grace!

Zustcinema Rudramadevi Rating :-  3 / 5
